Adolescent sexual offenders: Offender and offense characteristics.

Abstract: Descriptive data are presented on 305 adolescent sexual offenders. Types of offenses and the circumstances under which they occurred are described. Results suggest that adolescents commit an array of sexual offenses, that they are not typically isolated incidents, and that they are frequently indicative of more general adjustment difficulties.

“…In particular, several authors have either proposed (e.g. Barbaree, Hudson, & Seto, 1993) or presented data supporting that some variables differentiate ASOs with child victims from those with peer or adult victims (Carpenter, Peed, & Eastman, 1995;Fehrenbach, Smith, Monastersky, & Deisher, 1986;Hendriks & Bijleveld, 2004;Hsu & Starzynski, 1990;Hunter, Hazelwood, & Slesinger, 2000;Hunter, Figueredo, Malamuth, and Becker, 2003;Långström, Grann, & Lindblad, 2000;Richardson, Kelly, & Graham, 1997;Worling, 1995).…”

“…En ce qui concerne les aspects pronostiques, la littérature suggère l'existence de problèmes comportementaux concomitants aux délits sexuels : des antécédents de délits non sexuels [3,9], un délit sexuel antérieur [2,4], des comportements agressifs ainsi que d'autres comportements antisociaux. Considérant les antécédents délictueux sexuels juvéniles rapportés par les AICS adultes, différentes études se sont centrées sur l'évaluation du risque de récidive des adolescents AICS.…”

“…Although juveniles may abuse male or female victims, females tend to be the more prevalent victims. Juvenile abusers also tend to victimise those they know, including family members or friends/acquaintances, rather than strangers, and therefore, they carry out much of the abusive behaviour in their own homes (Fehrenbach et al, 1986). Some juveniles also use verbal and/or physical coercion to ensure their victim's compliance, or to prevent the victim's disclosure after the abuse.…”

“…The parents have often experienced their own chaotic or disturbed childhoods, and therefore bring a legacy of inadequate parenting models and insufficient ability to cope with raising a family. Separation or divorce between biological parents early in the life of young abusers is common (Fehrenbach, Smith, Monastersky and Deisher, 1986) and often results in a consequently unstable home life due to constant family 'reorganisations' created by the appearance of multiple step fathers. Exposure to domestic violence is also frequently reported (Lewis, Shankok and Pincus, 1979;Van Ness, 1984), and prevalence rates for experiencing or witnessing abuse (physical, emotional or sexual), and physical neglect are high.…”
