Adolescent Sexting: A Narrative Review

Abstract: This narrative review is based on a literature search on PsycIN-FO and PubMed that involved entering the terms adolescent sexting for papers published during the last five years. Following exclusion criteria, 52 papers could be classified as sexting studies including research on the prevalence, effects/comorbidities, risk factors and interventions for those problems. “…The participants experienced reduced pain as well as decreased fatigue, stress, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate. These results, like many others from exercise studies, likely resulted from stimulation of pressure receptors leading to increased vagal activity and the release of serotonin as an anti-pain neurotransmitter [25]. Vagal activity may be a potential underlying mechanism for the exercise effects.…”

“…The view of this committee was that exposure to pornography increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. Although external locus of control has been a significant factor in at least one study (Efrati & Gola, 2018), the absence of peer pressure variables in this research is surprising as it appears in the literature on comorbidities of pornography including Internet addiction , cyberbullying (Field, 2019), and sexting (Field, 2019). In a study on profiles of compulsive sexual behavior among adolescents, individuals who engaged in pornography had external locus of control along with greater loneliness and more sex-related online activity (Efrati et al, 2018).…”

“…That sex-free group engaged in lower pornography consumption and also had lower sexual desire and lower alcohol and tobacco consumption. The absence of literature on substance use as a risk factor for pornography in adolescents is surprising given its frequent association with other Internetrelated activities including Internet addiction and sexting (Field, 2019), activities that would be presumed to be comorbid with online pornography.…”
