Adolescent Resilience

Abstract: This study of resilience in adolescence shows the need for further research; the investigators question whether resilience is really a healthy state, and wonder if similar interventions are necessary for both "resilient" and "vulnerable" adolescents.

“…These definitions seem explicit in that self-efficacy and resilience have a partly overlapping meaning. A number of the same adjectives also are commonly used in self-efficacy research to describe being self-efficacious as they are used in resilience research to describe being resilient: strong, malleable, resistant despite obstacles, adaptable, and determined (e.g., Bandura, 1986Bandura, , 1997Hunter & Chandler;Stajkovic & Luthans, 1998, 2003Wagnild & Young).…”

“…In simple terms, the main difference between self-efficacy and resiliency is that resiliency tends to have a smaller domain and is reactive rather than proactive (Huey & Weisz, 1997;Hunter & Chandler, 1999). In relation to hope (Snyder, 2000), resiliency is quite similar to the pathways component of hope, but does not include the agency dimension of hope.…”

“…Certain items on the scale were noted to have low item-total correlation, and therefore only. Eight items in the scale that had a correlation of below 0.30 were omitted (28), and the remaining 6 (items [8][9][10][12][13][14] yielded an improved Cronbach alpha of 0.65. Factor analysis using principal component analysis followed by Varimax rotation procedure was computed for the 6-items, yielding 2 factors.…”

“…Prevalence studies of psychological distress and it's impact among adolescents in Nigeria is limited, with varying rates of distress reported, ranging between 15% and 50% (6-8, Fatoye, 1998 andIkegwuonu, 2009, unpublished report). Resilience to distress in adolescents has been conflictingly reported to be associated with high rates of depression and anxiety on one hand (9)(10), and also with lower rates of anxiety, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideas (11)(12)(13). Family factors, such as polygamy (Fatoye, 1998, unpublished report), lower socio-economic class, divorce and separation, have also been reported as risk factors for the development of psychological problems in adolescents (14)(15)(16)(17).…”
