Background: Teenage pregnancy remains an important and complex issue around the world, with reports indicating that Africa has higher rates than other continents. Studies have indicated that social and economic determinants are associated with these higher rates. Therefore this study aims to identify the social and economic influencers of teenage pregnancy which would help develop a best-practice approach to reduce its incidence in Africa. Methods: Data sets from the World Bank Organisation between 2008 and 2010 specific to 51 Africa countries were obtained to conduct this study, based on availability. Independent t-test, Spearman's correlation and regression analysis were performed. The eight social and economic variables used in this study are: GDP per capita, GINI index, Female Literacy rate, Health expenditure, Unemployed female rate, Gender equality, Contraceptive prevalence and urban population rate. Results: Independent t-test revealed that in countries where teenage pregnancy rate is high, Literacy rate, contraceptive prevalence rate and Healthcare expenditure rate was low. Spearman correlation indicated that female literacy rate, Healthcare expenditure, GDP per capita and Contraceptive prevalence had a significant inverse relationship with teenage pregnancy rate. Logistic regression indicates that Female Literacy rate is the best predictor of teenage pregnancy in Africa.

Objetivos: Describir las prácticas médicas realizadas en la atención prenatal en mujeres en Perú e identificar si las prácticas de control prenatal (CPN) recibidas por mujeres adolescentes y adultas fueron distintas. Material y métodos: Estudio descriptivo y comparativo. Se utilizaron datos recolectados por la Encuesta Demográfica y de Salud Familiar continua 2004-2008, con 994 adolescentes (15-19 años) y 12556 adultas (20-49 años). Se efectuaron comparaciones entre adolescentes y adultas en relación con las prácticas médicas efectuadas durante la atención prenatal. Resultados: El 50% de las adolescentes inició el CPN en el tercer mes de embarazo en comparación con la mitad de las adultas que lo inició en el segundo mes. La mitad de las adolescentes reportaron 7 visitas de CPN en total mientras que el 50% de adultas reportaron 8. Menor proporción de adolescentes reportó haber recibido algunas de las acciones y prácticas médicas que se efectúan durante la atención prenatal. Conclusiones: Las adolescentes inician la atención prenatal un poco más tarde que las mujeres adultas, tienen menos CPN y hay diferencias en las acciones efectuadas en los CPN. Esto sugiere que las adolescentes están en desventajas de recibir una atención prenatal que incluya todas las acciones recomendadas por la normatividad. Particularly, we aim to identify differences in the services provided to adolescents compared to adult women. Desde décadas atrás se sabe que muchos de los problemas asociados al embarazo adolescente se pueden controlar con una atención prenatal adecuada, que permita identificar desde el primer trimestre del embarazo ciertas carencias y condiciones de riesgo (6). La atención prenatal, cuando se brinda con calidad, reduce riesgos importantes para el binomio madrehijo (13). No obstante, se ha documentado que las adolescentes acuden en menor proporción al control prenatal (CPN) en comparación con adultas (14) y, cuando acuden, lo hacen de forma tardía o de forma no recurrente (6).Teniendo en cuenta el cumplimiento de un mínimo de cuatro consultas recomendado por la OMS (13), la cobertura de la atención prenatal en las mujeres en general de Perú es de 93% en zonas urbanas (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011) y 79% en el ámbito rural (15). ___________________________________________________________Costa Rica has a large Nicaraguan minority, the health of which has not been actively studied. It is known that pregnancy rates of Nicaraguans are higher than those of the native population, but the reasons behind these differences are unknown. Because of the health and social implications early childbearing particularly can have on young mothers and their children, it is important to better understand the circumstances out of which these differences derive, and whether migration per se renders adolescents susceptible to early childbearing.This study aims to determine the prevalence of adolescent childbearing among Nicaraguan migrants and Costa Ricans, to determine whether Nicaraguan origin was an independent predictor of giving birth in adolescence, and to examine the extent to which socio-demographic factors were associated with adolescent childbearing in the country. To reach these goals, we studied 14 675 Nicaraguan-born and 228 569 Costa Rican adolescents aged 12-19 years using the information of the 2000 Population and Housing Census. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the country of origin and the outcome measure, adolescent childbearing, while controlling for socio-demographic factors (age, educational attainment, marital status, level of urbanization and poverty).The prevalence of adolescent childbearing was over two times higher among the Nicaraguan migrants compared to Costa Ricans (26% vs. 9.5%, respectively). The migrants' increased odds of having gone through a pregnancy during adolescence decreased from 3.34 (CI 3.21, 3.48) to 1.88 (CI 1.79, 1.97) when controlling for socio-economic factors. Age, low educational attainment, urban residence, poverty, and especially living in a union were all significant predictors of adolescent pregnancy.Nicaraguan-born status is associated with adolescent childbearing in Costa Rica. Further research is needed to understand what factors, other than those associated with socio-economic indicators, contribute to the differing prevalence of adolescent childbearing in Costa Rica.
