Teenage childbearing occurs in every society worldwide. Teenagers are understudied and a complex age group to reach. It is essential to know the levels and trends of teenage childbearing with its socio-economic and demographic differentials. Therefore, the overall purpose of the present study is to explore the levels, trends, and differentials of teenage childbearing in India. The required data were obtained from National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The analysis is based on the samples of 24,811 women aged 15-19 in 2005-06 (NFHS-3), 1,21,552 in 2015-16 (NFHS-4) and 1,22,544 in 2019-20 (NFHS-5). Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analysis have been carried out by using SPSS-23. In NFHS-5, the proportion of teenage childbearing is 6.8 per cent, which showed a decline from 16.0 per cent in NFHS-3. Tripura (21.9%) has the highest teenage childbearing percentage, whereas Ladakh had zero teenage childbearing. Among the districts in India, Dhalai district (28.2%) in Tripura has the highest percentage of teenage childbearing. The percentage of teenage childbearing is significantly higher in rural areas than in urban areas, except in Goa and Himachal Pradesh. Higher educational attainment and a rich household wealth index are associated with a lower incidence of teenage childbearing. Except for the NFHS-3, teenage childbearing is comparatively higher among Muslims than among other religions. Exposure to media helps in reducing teenage childbearing. Teenage childbearing is higher among the Scheduled Tribe (S.T) than in other castes. Despite some progress, more has to be done to minimise teenage childbearing in India.

Background: Globally pregnancy and childbirth complications are the leading cause of death among adolescents, with evidence showing that antenatal care (ANC) is a very effective preventive intervention. In Burundi, there is limited information on the extent to which pregnant adolescents utilise such services. Objective: To assess the ANC utilisation and factors associated with its use among adolescent mothers in Ngozi Province, Burundi. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, health facility-based study among 216 adolescent mothers who had given birth within two years preceding this study, using structured questionnaires and records from previous ANC booklets. A multistage random sampling technique was used to select respondents while the utilisation of ANC was determined by the frequency of ANC visits and the time when the women enrolled for the first ANC visit. Results: The majority (98.1%) of adolescent mothers in Ngozi Province used ANC services. Most respondents (64.8%) initiated ANC services within the first trimester while 57.8% attained the minimum of four recommended ANC visits. Marital status (P = 0.001), geographical location (P = 0.009), occupation of the partner (P = 0.002) and type of the last pregnancy (P = 0.012) were associated with ANC initiation within the first trimester while marital status (P < 0.001), respondent’s employment (P = 0.003) and type of last pregnancy (P < 0.001) were associated with appropriate ANC frequency. Conclusion: This study revealed a high use of ANC services among adolescent mothers, although more than one-third attended ANC late. There is therefore the need to put more effort into improving early booking for ANC.

Teenage pregnancy may have a huge negative social and medical influence on mothers' and children's health globally. Compared to adult primigravida, young women experience more harmful perinatal problems, such as premature births, neonatal fatalities and stillbirths, and the delivery of children with low birth weight. With negative perinatal outcomes, in India, teenage pregnancy is still a widespread and important public health issue that needs urgent attention. One of the main causes of mortality for females between the ages of 15 and 19 is pregnancy and delivery problems. The health of young women in India is, therefore, seriously threatened by adolescent pregnancies. Neonatal and maternal difficulties are more common when a teen gets pregnant. To bring about change, avert problems, and lower the risk of maternal death, specialized antenatal care (ANC) and health education are crucial. In India, teenage pregnancy is very high. To prevent this, there is a need to focus on teenage education regarding safe sexual practices and pregnancy complications.
