“…Evidence suggests that smoking mediates other psychosocial causes of suicidal ideation (e.g., depression) and is likely not a causal pathway [37]. Other researchers have also shown that among adolescent females, sexual activity and sexual risk-taking is associated with increased suicidal ideation and suicide attempts [36, 3843]. Both male and female adolescents who used alcohol at the time of sexual intercourse were found to have greater odds of considering a suicide attempt [36].…”

Hallfors et al (1) found that adolescents' use of marijuana and other illegal drugs was associated with a particularly high risk of suicide ideation and suicide attempts.…”

“…Adolescent substance use has been associated with accidental injuries (Boden & Fergusson, 2011) and poor mental health (Hallfors et al, 2004). In addition to the direct health implications of participation in delinquent activities such as violence, arrest and institutionalization for juvenile offenses is linked to numerous markers of poor mental health for adults (Lanctôt, Cernkovich, & Giordano, 2007; Massoglia 2008, while early onset of sexual behavior exposes adolescents to a wide range of adverse outcomes, such as sexually transmitted infections (Weinstock, Berman, & Cates, 2004), unintended/unwanted pregnancies (Santelli & Melnikas, 2010), and poor mental health (Hallfors et al, 2004; Meier, 2007). We consider the effects of eco-network reinforcement after controlling for individual and household characteristics, and a host of neighborhood structural and social process controls.…”
