Adolescent Career Development in Urban‐Residing Aboriginal Families in Canada

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to understand how urban-residing Aboriginal adolescent-parent dyads (n = 11) jointly constructed and acted on goals and strategies with their social supports (n = 17) to facilitate the adolescents' career development. These joint projects can be clustered into 3 joint career development projects: (a) navigating toward a safe future, (b) negotiating… Show more

“…This article describes the theoretical underpinnings and strategies of the qualitative action‐project method (QA‐PM). The QA‐PM method was developed in the fields of counseling psychology (Young, Valach, Ball, Paseluikho, et al, 2001; Young, Valach, Dillabough, Dover, & Matthes, 1994; Young, Antal, et al, 1999; Young, Marshall, Domene, Arato‐Bolivar, et al, 2006) and health psychology (Valach, Young, & Lynam, 1996; Young, Logan, Lovato, Moffat, & Shoveller, 2005; Young, Lynam, et al, 2001), and is proving very useful for studying families and intimate relationships (Domene et al, 2008; Marshall, Young, Stevens, et al, 2011; Marshall, Young, Tilton‐Weaver, 2008; Nee, McLelland, & Domene, 2009; Young, Marshall, Domene, Graham, Logan, Templeton, et al, 2007; Young, Marshall, Domene, Graham, Logan, Zaidman‐Zait, et al, 2008; Zaidman‐Zait & Young, 2008). Our presentation of the QA‐PM is accompanied by examples to illustrate how the method provides rich information about daily family life and dynamic interpersonal processes.…”

“…The dyad is asked to have a conversation that lasts as long as they want. In the case of our work with parents and adolescent or young‐adult children, researchers suggest a 10‐ to 15‐min conversation (Young, Valach, Ball, Paseluikho, et al, 2001; Young, Marshall, Domene, Arato‐Bolivar, et al, 2006; Young, Marshall, Domene, Graham, Logan, Zaidman‐Zait, et al, 2008; Marshall, Young, Stevens, et al, 2011); with adult participants, 20‐ to 30‐min conversations have been used (Domene et al, 2008). The researchers then leave the room and participants generate and direct the course of the conversation by themselves.…”
