The research which she cited in support of that proposition included: the work of Gold (1963) demon strating the importance of the social status of the father's profession on ability to influence sons' behavior; the research of Smelser (1963) who found that sons of high-status parents who perceived their parents' status as prestigious perceived themselves as competent and independent; and the work of Douvan (1963) on the modeling effects of maternal employment for females.
