“…1 For the last 70 years, the first line of defense has been pentavalent antimonials, sodium stibogluconate (SAG or Pentosam) and meglucamine antimoniate (Glucantime); 2 however, increased drug resistance has brought amphotericin B (AmpB) to the forefront of treatment options as the therapeutic success rate of AmpB is high with no report of either relapse or resistance to AmpB in otherwise immunocompetent patients. 3,4 AmpB, a macrolide heptaene antibiotic, is a classical antifungal drug 5 and possesses various immunomodulatory effects on neutrophils, macrophages, NK cells, T cells and B cells. 6e12 This novel drug with antimicrobial and tumoricidal activities, stimulates the transcription and production of proinflammatory cytokines like TNF-a, IL-1b, MCP-1, MIP-1b, nitric oxide, prostaglandins and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 from murine and human immune cells.…”
