Adipose Tissue Stem Cells for Therapy: An Update on the Progress of Isolation, Culture, Storage, and Clinical Application

Abstract: Adipose tissue stem cells (ASCs), known as multipotent stem cells, are most commonly used in the clinical applications in recent years. Adipose tissues (AT) have the advantage in the harvesting, isolation, and expansion of ASCs, especially an abundant amount of stem cells compared to bone marrow. ASCs can be found in stromal vascular fractions (SVF) which are easily obtained from the dissociation of adipose tissue. Both SVFs and culture-expanded ASCs exhibit the stem cell characteristics such as differentiatio… Show more

“…Recently, it is considered that adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) constitute a "gold standard" for regenerative medicine [19,22,23]. Given available sources of MSCs, they are mainly isolated from bone marrow (BMSCs) as well as adipose tissue (ASCs) [24][25][26]. The MSCs possess capacity to self-renew and differentiate into various cells, such as adipocytes, chondrocytes, fibroblasts, myocytes, and osteoblasts [25,26].…”

“…In conditional cultures, ADSCs exhibit a multipotent differentiation capacity into cell types originated from three germ layers. 59 ADSCs express CD44, CD73, CD90, and CD105 and are negative for CD31 and CD45. 60 ADSCs can induce proliferation of IL-10-producing regulatory B cells that regulate the immune system by anti-inflammatory potential.…”

“…Recent evidence indicates that, compared with subcutaneous adipose tissue (ScAT), infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) is a unique adipose tissue with some distinct features (Sun et al, 2018). ScAT, a fat pad beneath the skin, is becoming an attractive stem cell source for tissue regeneration due to its ease of harvest in large quantities with a minimally invasive procedure (Chu et al, 2019). IPFP, located inside the knee joint and outside the synovial membrane, is becoming a promising stem cell source for cartilage engineering and regeneration (Sun et al, 2018).…”
