Adiponectin mediates the additive effects of combining daily exercise with caloric restriction for treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver

Abstract: The current findings provide experimental evidence in favor of the combination of EX and CR as a superior strategy for NAFLD treatment than EX or CR alone.

“…Our results are consistent with the notion that early in obesity reversal, rapid normalization of dysglycemia is matched by a robust improvement in hepatic steatosis and metabolism (though not insulin signaling responsiveness) (Jung et al . 2013, Cho et al . 2016).…”

“…Even when the diagnosis is achieved, treatment is not easily established, as there are no approved drugs for treatment. Several treatment protocols are suggested and applied by clinicians and researchers, yet there is no consensus among experts and clinicians on medical treatment (7). Generally, a combination of modified diet and exercise is recommended for treatment (8).…”

“…Thus, it is considered that DsbA‐L may play a key role in the development and progression of NAFLD, especially in obese populations. In the present study, the association between DsbA‐L polymorphism and the median ratio of HMW to total adiponectin, which is related to protection against adipose tissue inflammation and insulin resistance, was more pronounced in overweight subjects than in the overall study population ( Figure ). However, we did not find any direct effects of DsbA‐L polymorphism on the risk of NAFLD, even in overweight subjects (Eqs.…”

“…Adiponectin, an adipose tissue-specific hormone, has been reported to be associated with the protection against adipose tissue inflammation, insulin resistance, and mitochondrial dysfunction and to have an important role in the prevention of obesity and its related diseases. [8][9][10] Plasma adiponectin exists as a low-molecular-weight trimer, medium-molecular-weight hexamer, and high-molecularweight (HMW) oligomer. 10 HMW oligomers of adiponectin are the major relevant forms for improving insulin sensitivity, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic activities, and low levels of HMW oligomers represent an independent risk factor for several metabolic diseases.…”
