Adiponectin-leptin ratio: A useful estimate of insulin resistance in patients with Type 2 diabetes

Abstract: The adiponectin-leptin ratio is associated with insulin resistance, measured with the euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp, in Caucasians with T2D. The association with clamp derived sensitivity index is even stronger than that of HOMA, QUICKI, fasting glucose/insulin ratio or McAuley index and is independent of body mass index or glycemic control. The adiponectin-leptin ratio promises to become a new laboratory marker of insulin resistance in T2D.

“…Adiponectin/leptin ratio may provide a reliable measure of insulin sensitivity [47]. A high carbohydrate diet promotes glucose intolerance and insulin secretion as well as reduces insulin sensitivity, therefore, increases leptin, an insulinresistance surrogate, and reduces adiponectin, an insulin sensitivity surrogate [46,48,49].…”

“…Subsequently, many investigators have reported that the adiponectin/leptin ratio (or leptin/adiponectin ratio) is a relevant and reliable marker of insulin resistance in comparison with other parameters [20]. However, the effect of adipokines on metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance seems to stem from the influence of a combination of adipokines, rather than from the effect of a single adipokine [22].…”

“…tin are associated with obesity, and are involved in the process of insulin resistance [7,9,20]. Leptin is an adipose-specific hormone contributing to body weight and energy regulation, and it modulates insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal [11,13,22,46,47].…”
