Adiaspiromycosis Causing Respiratory Failure and a Review of Human Infections Due to Emmonsia and Chrysosporium spp

Abstract: bWe report a case of a 27-year-old male who presented with respiratory distress that required mechanical ventilation. Transbronchial biopsy revealed adiaspores of the fungus Emmonsia crescens within granulomata, a condition known as adiaspiromycosis. The patient received amphotericin products and corticosteroids, followed by itraconazole, and made a full recovery. Emmonsia crescens is a saprobe with a wide distribution that is primarily a rodent pathogen. The clinical characteristics of the 20 cases of human p… Show more

“…was reported recently to cause invasive pulmonary infection in a 16-yearold male with acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia (Suankratay et al 2015). This species can cause endogenous endophthalmitis and allergic pneumonitis (Shekhar et al 2014;Anstead et al 2012).…”

“…Keratinophilic fungi are also involved in recycling carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur from α-keratins in natural environments, and play an important role in ecological systems (Marchisio 2000). However, keratinophiles have also been considered potential pathogens, and have attracted the attention of dermatologists and mycologists due to associations with human and animal mycoses (De Hoog et al 2000, Gan et al 2002, Anstead et al 2012, Sigler et al 2013. Pathogenic keratinophilic fungi isolated have predominantly been Microsporum Gruby, Trichophyton Malmsten, Aphanoascus Zukal, Chrysosporium Corda, Geomyces Traaen and Myceliophthora Costantin genera (Kamath et al 2015, Suankratay et al 2015, Anbu et al 2004.…”

“…It is a keratinophilic filamentous fungus commonly isolated from soil and occasionally encountered in the laboratory as contaminants of cutaneous and respiratory specimens 1. Although human infection is very rare, it can lead to either serious systemic or ocular diseases 24. Among ocular infections, there were only two reports, which were keratomycosis and endophthalmitis from literature search.…”
