“…In order to demonstrate this effect experimentally on the ground state of an atom, we investigated at first the population transfer on atomic beams of Eu [7] passing through specially confined and spatially displaced electric and magnetic fields. At that time we failed in detecting the proposed transfer, but later we were able to obtain a conclusive piece of evidence using beams of Ga and a pump-probe detection technique [8]. For all these experiments we had to know the tensor polarizabilities of the levels, which were determined in the present experiments.…”
