Adhesive and Antibacterial Films Based on Marine-Derived Fucoidan and Chitosan

Abstract: Marine-derived polymers are environmentally friendly and sustainable biomaterials that have structural similarities with the main components of the extracellular matrix. Moreover, some marine polymers have specific bioactivity that can be transferred to the systems made of these biomolecules. Herein, we developed antibacterial adhesive films combining two marine polysaccharides, namely, fucoidan and chitosan. Fucoidan was functionalized with catechol groups (FCat) to improve its adhesive properties. This modif… Show more

“…In addition, the mentioned chitosan films retain the inherent antibacterial properties of chitosan, making them effective in preventing bacterial growth [ 162 ]. This is especially useful in applications like wound dressings where infection prevention is crucial [ 163 ]. Moreover, the films can be used as drug delivery systems, with the drug incorporated within the film and released over time [ 164 ].…”

“…Based on the fact that chitosan is the only basic polysaccharide among natural polysaccharides, it has excellent biological properties and can be chemically modi ed [21]. Chitosan has been chemically modi ed to improve its utilization, making it widely used in medicine, nanomaterials, food packaging, and other elds [22][23][24][25]. Like other biomass materials, chitosan has the potential to be used as an adhesive in the wood industry.…”
