Adhesion molecules as a prognostic marker of liver cirrhosis

Abstract: In addition to the classic factor implicated in mortality (Child-Pugh class), alterations in inflammation-related components and soluble adhesion molecules, as representatives of hemodynamic alterations, are of prognostic significance in cirrhotic patients.

“…These observations are in line with 2 recent studies that also highlighted the predictive value of sTNF-R 75 levels as an independent risk factor for cirrhotic patients. 42,43 However, these studies were either focused on short-term survival (3 months) or did not evaluate the value of sTNF-Rs in comparison with MELD. 42,43 Furthermore, we made some additional observations.…”

“…42,43 However, these studies were either focused on short-term survival (3 months) or did not evaluate the value of sTNF-Rs in comparison with MELD. 42,43 Furthermore, we made some additional observations. Presence of elevated sTNF-R 75 levels or a high MELD score markedly reduced false-negative rates compared with single tests, which is clinically relevant especially for the decision whether to refer a patient for liver transplantation.…”

“…Cell adhesion molecules are known as prognostic markers of liver fibrosis [43]. The expressions of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, modulated by TNF-α, are upregulated in alcoholic hepatitis, CCl 4 -induced liver injury, and nutritional fibrosis [44][45][46].…”

“…Only one study fulfilled all quality criteria [39]. Thirty-one studies met our criteria for a 'good' quality study [32,37,39,47,55,57,60,62,63,66,76,81,85,89,92,[95][96][97]100,103,104,112,116,117,123,124,128,130,138,142,143]. …”
