Adhesion and invasion to duck embryo fibroblast cells by Riemerella anatipestifer

Abstract: Here, we investigated adhesion and invasion of Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) to primary duck embryo fibroblast (DEF) cells. The ability of RA to adhere to, and more importantly, to invade DEF cells was demonstrated by using a gentamicin invasion assay and was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Adhesion of RA could be found by TEM after 1 h of inoculation. Both apoptosis and necrocytosis of DEF were indicated by TEM after 10 h of incubation, which suggested a complex mechanism of DEF cell death… Show more

“…Most of them are pathogens from the genera Riemerella , Bergeyella , Flavobacterium ( F. psychrophilum ), Myroides and Tenacibaculum . At least some of these genera, such as Flavobacterium , Riemerella and Myroides , contain species having non‐obligate intracellular living stages (Decostere et al ., ; Li et al ., ), in which host cell derived small organic compounds such as C 3 compound, glucose and amino acids serve as the primary carbon sources (Eisenreich et al ., ; Manske and Hilbi, ). There is also experimental evidence that the freshwater pathogen F. psychrophilum uses peptides but not carbohydrates (Bernardet and Kerouault, ).…”

“…Treatment with antibiotics is the default solution for R. anatipestifer infection, but with the emergence of drug-resistant strains and the push for antibiotics-free farming, alternative measures such as vaccination are being developed (Huang et al 2002;Hu et al 2011;Li et al 2012). Currently, multivalent inactivated vaccines are available commercially for the control of R. anatipestifer, mainly against serotypes 1, 2 and 6.…”

“…Until now, more than 21 serotypes of RA have been reported, which serotypes 1, 2, 6, and 10 are the primary serotypes in China (Cheng et al, ). The characteristics of RA and the function of some genes have been reported (Li et al, ; Liao et al, ; Huang et al, ; Liu et al, ; Wang et al, ; Yi et al, ; Zhang et al, ). Genetic diversity among RA strains may underlie the diverse growth conditions and virulence that have been associated with this species.…”
