Adherence to the Mediterranean diet attenuates inflammation and coagulation process in healthy adults

Abstract: Adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduction in the concentrations of inflammation and coagulation markers. This may partly explain the beneficial actions of this diet on the cardiovascular system.

“…The adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet has been associated with a reduction in low-grade inflammatory status, better endothelial function, an improved profile of coagulation markers (Chrysohoou et al, 2004;Ló pez-Garcia et al, 2004), and less insulin resistance (MacKeown et al, 2004). All these factors are thought to lead not only to a lower risk of chronic diseases, but also to a better metabolic control of already established diseases.…”

“…Similar components are included in the traditional Mediterranean diet defined a priori by Trichopoulou et al (3) . The beneficial effects of the Mediterranean diet have been widely examined (3,4,(33)(34)(35) . Prospective studies such as the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition)-Greek cohort have shown a decrease in mortality for all causes, CVD and cancer among subjects who follow this dietary pattern (3) .…”

“…As nutrients and foods are consumed in combination rather than separately, interactions are possible. For this reason, there is a recent tendency to study the overall diet, using techniques such as factor analysis to identify dietary patterns in a population (Fung et al, 2001a;Lopez-Garcia et al, 2004), or computing dietary scores, which measure the adherence to dietary guidelines (Kant et al, 2000;McCullough et al, 2000a ;Fung et al, 2001aFung et al, , 2005Trichopoulou et al, 2003;Chrysohoou et al, 2004;Pitsavos et al, 2005;Panagiotakos et al, 2006).…”
