Adherence to Medication, Diet and Physical Activity and the Associated Factors Amongst Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Introduction: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) has increased considerably while the outcome of diabetic management is suboptimal. In order to promote diabetic management, associated factors for adherence to medications, diet, and physical activity (PA) need to be more clearly identified amongst patients with T2D. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 206 men and 294 women amongst patients with diabetes who were registered in ten special diabetic clinics in Shiraz, Iran from Novem… Show more

“…In our study, a higher percentage of diabetic patients in the group with higher adherence to MeDiet was observed. This is similar as published in a cohort of diabetic patients, where they found that 77.2% of patients had moderate adherence to MeDiet, greater than other populations with vascular risk factors [18]. This fact could be explained by the greater dietary control that is included in the treatment of patients with diabetes and to the awareness of these patients to control their diet.…”

“…We assessed the medication adherence using a self-reported, structured, eight-item questionnaire that has been validated in different study settings [19,20] with the following cutoff scores: >2 = low adherence, 1 or 2 = medium adherence, 0 = high adherence [21]. The eight items in the questionnaire were: (1) medication frequency, (2) history, (3) deliberately missed doses, (4) cutting back without consultation, (5) forgetfulness while traveling, (6) stopping in an under-control situation, (7) inconvenience of taking medicine every day, and (8) difficulties in remembering to take the medicine.…”

“…[ 1 ] In Iran, the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes among adults was rapidly growing from 5.75% in 2010 to 8.7% in 2018. [ 2 ] Diabetes, characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose, can potentially lead to serious damages to heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves over time, if not controlled. [ 3 ]…”
