Adherence to High-Intensity Interval Training in Cardiac Rehabilitation

Abstract: Purpose: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is gaining popularity as a training approach for patients attending cardiac rehabilitation (CR). While the literature has focused on the efficacy of HIIT for improving cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), particularly when compared with moderate intensity exercise, less emphasis has been placed on adherence to HIIT. The aim of this review was to summarize the current literature regarding adherence to HIIT in CR patients with coronary artery disease. … Show more

“…In the process of using this training method, the essential difference between intensive interval training and high-intensity interval training is that the interval time of training in the training unit is different. The interval time of intensive interval training is between 100 and 300 seconds, and the training intensity is controlled between 5% and 10% of the intensity of sports events [ 15 ].…”

“…HIIT exercise intensity sessions will be calculated as mean %HR peak and Borg RPE 6-20 across sessions and participants. Likewise, duration will be reported as mean session duration and average time spent in high intensity intervals 44. Tolerability of HIIT will be explored by clinical measures of disease activity with disease flares defined as increase in DAS28 >1.2 or>0.6 if DAS28 ≥3.2,45 DAPSA≥746 or ASDAS≥0.9 47…”

“…The session attendance and adherence to HIIT will be reported according to the recommendations of Taylor and colleagues. 34 The attendance data will be reported as the proportion of sessions attended. Adherence to the intensity (i.e., proportion of sessions meeting the prescribed intensity) and duration (i.e., number of high-intensity bouts completed) of the training will also be reported.…”
