Adherence to community based group exercise interventions for older people: A mixed-methods systematic review

Abstract: Evidence surrounding these programmes is limited both in terms of long-term adherence measures and the views of participants. However, based on limited findings there is some indication that community based group exercise programmes have long-term adherence rates of almost 70%. Incorporating the views of older people into programme designs may provide guidance for innovative interventions leading to sustained adherence.

Previous studies examining the mechanism underlying the relationship between exercising with others and health revealed the possibility that social relationships may contribute to the association between participation in a sports organization and incidence of functional disability917.…”

“…Durheim (1964) and Anderson (1983) however argued that contemporary society builds community around co hesion, skills and interest as opposed to locality. Wiesenfeld (1996), Robinson (2014), and Farrance et al (2016) in line with their argument termed community as homogenous groups characterised by an emotional bond. This suggests that communities emerge with the passage of time through a dynamic process.…”

“…One key facilitator for influencing older people’s adherence to CBGEP is the role of social support and its ensuing networks [9, 20, 21]. This is important because the quality and quantity of a person’s social relationships are a key health determinant, not only in terms of mental health but also in relation to morbidity and mortality [22].…”
