Adherence to Beers Criteria in Geriatrics: A Retrospective Study in a Saudi Teaching Hospital

Abstract: Background: The aging process makes geriatric populations more prone to various chronic diseases. Such diseases require older patients to be on more medications than any other age group and make them more susceptible to adverse drug events related to potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). Aim: To identify the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications among older people and explore the most commonly prescribed PIMs in hospitalized patients. Design and Setting: A retrospective study conducted in… Show more

“…The current study witnessed male predominance (55%) which was found to be similar to other studies 10,11 whereas Zhang H, et al 12 reported predominance of female. The mean age ± SD of the present study population (70.67 ±5.43 years) was found to be less than reported earlier as 75.17 ± 7.66 years 11 and 75.3±7.3 years 12 and higher than reported by Narvekar RS, et al 13 (68.88 years). Most of the patients were found in the age group of 65-70 years followed by 71-75 years and 76-80 years.…”

“…The study population's mean age ± SD was 70.67 ±5.43 years. The majority of patients were found to be between the ages of 65 and 70 years (59), followed by 71 to 75 years (24) and 76 to 80 years (11) as shown in Table 1. The average length of hospital stay during the study period was 4.81±2.27 days.…”

“…PPIs such as pantoprazole are the most commonly used and prescribed drug in hospitals and that should be avoided in the elderly. The main reason for this is that the use of PPI is associated with the risk of Clostridium difficile infection and the increased likelihood of bone loss and fractures [3,9,11]. The present study shows that a total of 216 (80.59%) patients out of 268 were reported to prescribe pantoprazole during admission whereas 149 patients (60%) were prescribed during discharge.…”

“…Older patients are at particular risk of PIMs; PIM frequencies from 24% to 92% were reported [ 11 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ], and these frequencies are different according to the applied criterion of the PIMs classification tool.…”
