Background Adolescents living with HIV are a key population who are susceptible to poor health. The global coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and widespread national COVID-19 restrictions has disrupted health service delivery and HIV support services, affecting treatment adherence among adolescents with HIV. Aim This study aimed to review the available literature on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the HIV treatment of adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Method Seven online databases were searched for articles published between 2020 and 2022 that focused on the impact of COVID-19 on adolescents living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy. A data charting extraction form and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol (PRISMA) flowchart were used for screening and reporting the articles in this review. A narrative synthesis was conducted. Results Five overarching themes emerged from the articles in this review, which highlighted the mental, social, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the impact of the reallocation of healthcare services and challenges to accessing HIV care services on the antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence of adolescents living with HIV. Conclusion The global COVID-19 pandemic affected adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in many ways, but very little research has been done to describe the various ways in which the physical and mental well-being of adolescents were impacted. Contribution The findings of this review can be used to further inform policies and interventions aimed at the care and well-being of adolescents on antiretroviral therapy within sub-Saharan Africa.

Purpose of Review Pediatric HIV differentiated service delivery (DSD) programming has historically lagged behind adult care despite WHO recommendations to include family-friendly alternatives for children and caregivers. This review explores the status of Pediatric DSD programming before the COVID-19 pandemic and then reviews published differentiated approaches that developed during the pandemic. Recent Findings Differentiated service delivery programming for adults living with HIV has increased worldwide, and patient outcomes from these programs have been positive. Pediatric DSD programming has lagged, with many children ineligible for multi-month refills. Despite WHO recommendations to space ART visits for children, limited access to viral load monitoring and a lack of viral suppression among children have left them out of this more convenient care option. Community ART groups historically were not structured to include children. Furthermore, after-hours clinics and teen clubs with ART dispensing have not reached the majority of CLHIV. Summary This review highlights programs that developed out of necessity during the lockdowns of the pandemic. Ingenuity and creativity forced programmers to provide care to their patients with less patient-clinician interaction. Children became eligible for multi-month dispensing as programs loosened eligibility criteria. Technology helped provide virtual psychological support, and unique ART delivery methods were developed. This rapid expansion or growth spurt, of pediatric DSD programming sped up the inclusion of children into care options that were less burdensome to the family. As we move away from the pandemic and adjust to a new standard, we will remain diligent in ensuring that CLHIV outcomes remain stable or perhaps, improve.

Knowledge and Practices of the Fourth Year Degree Nursing Students Regarding Tuberculosis Management at a University in Khomas Region, Namibia

Background: Namibia has one of the highest incidence rates in the world reporting nearly 10 000 cases in 2015, with multi-drug resistants’ TB prevalence of between 3.9 percent for new cases 8.7 percent for previously treated cases. Regardless of Namibia being among the countries that are worst affected by TB, significant improvements have been made in the country in terms of TB diagnosis, treatment and care. Intensified screening, introduction of WHO-recommended rapid molecular testing for TB, Directly Observed Treatment (DOT, Tuberculosis Preventative Therapy (TPT) eligible for PLHIV and others have been adapted to deal with increasing TB incidence. Methods: The researcher applied a quantitative descriptive research design carried out among fourth year nursing students at the University of Namibia, main campus. Data was collected using self- developed and self-handed printed questionnaires. A simple random sampling method was used to obtain a sample from the population. The population size of the study was 74, however only 69 responses were attainable. Results: The overall perceived knowledge regarding TB management was generally satisfactory. The findings of this study also revealed that nursing students had fair practices towards the management of TB as some students still practiced bad and unethical practices regarding TB management. Conclusion: The University of Namibia should also introduce a specific module, preferably from 1st year specifically on basic TB management. Future researches also recommended on topics such as Experiences of nursing students working in TB wards/clinics and the knowledge, attitude and practices of nursing students when caring for TB positive patients.
