“…A prime indication for the diagnosis of minimal, non-palpable, asymptomatic and hghly curable breast cancer is the presence of radiologic mass and/or a cluster of microcalcifications. Fine punctate calcifications clustered in a localized area appear in approximately one-third of the non-palpable carcinomas and constitute a strong criteria for biopsy [Venet et al, 1971;Shepard et al, 19741 . In a five-year survey of a series of 408 women at high risk who previously had unilateral mastectomy, yearly screening with addition of mammography to the clinical examination of the remaining breast revealed 12 non-palpable carcinomas in patients over age SO, of which seven had suspicious microcalcifications on mammography [Rosner et al, 19781. In the present study, fine punctate microcalcifications seen by X-ray mammography were not detectable by ultrasonography.…”

“…The most significant study from New York has been designed to compare the mortality from breast cancer in women in whom regular annual screening has been carried out by clinical examination and mammography with the mortality of those who are receiving normal medical care (Strax et al, 1967Venet et al, 1969). Though the final evaluation of this study must await assessment of mortality, it is already apparent that those cases of breast cancer which have been discovered in the screened group have a lower incidence of lymphatic involvement than those arising in the control population.…”

“…However, clinical examination (Venet et al, 1969) and mammography (Pressman, 1977) are both imperfect means of following patients.…”
