Adenovirus infection in children hospitalized with pneumonia in Guangzhou, China

Abstract: Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a non-envelope and double-stranded DNA virus. 1 It belongs to the Mastadenovirus genus (Adenoviridae family). The virus was first identified by Rowe et al in 1953. In recent years, new HAdV genotypes are increasingly recognized through the use of phylogenetic analysis based on whole genomic sequences. There are at least 90 genotypes of HAdVs have been recognized that

“…The present study recorded the epidemiological distribution of circulating HAdV strains among hospitalized patients with respiratory tract infections (RTIs) between 2017 and 2019 in Guangzhou City, China. In this study, the overall positive rate of HAdV was 2.4%, which is consistent with the positive rate (2.0%-6.1%) found in hospitalized patients with acute viral respiratory infection in other recent reports [3,[19][20][21]. However, two previous studies conducted in the Northern part of China showed a higher HAdV prevalence (10.4%-20.1%) than our study [22,23].…”

“…Regarding patient demographic data, there was no signi cant difference observed in HAdV detections between genders in this study. This is consistent with the ndings of previous studies conducted in China [3,20]. However, this was in contrast to some previous reports that male children were more likely to be infected with HAdV [24,25].…”

“…The most commonly isolated serotype was HAdV-7 in children with pneumonia, but HAdV-3 was the most common serotype in children with bronchitis, tonsillitis, and URTI. Many studies have shown that HAdV pneumonia is predominantly caused by HAdV-3 and -7 ( Zou et al, 2020 ). HAdV-2 is the most common type isolated in children with tonsillitis.…”
