Adenovirus-Associated Acute Appendicitis: An Under-Recognized Relationship?

Abstract: By using qPCR, this study demonstrated an association between ADV and AA higher than has been previously reported: ADV was detected in 14% of AA cases in this series versus in only 0.23% of AA cases in previous studies (p < 0.01). There was no evidence of CMV, EBV, or enterovirus association with AA in this study. Comparison of qPCR to IHC shows that histologic analysis may overlook evidence of ADV in appendiceal tissue: qPCR is significantly more sensitive than light microscopy and IHC for detecting ADV in th… Show more

“…[ 17 ] Research shows that appendicitis is associated with viral infection, and the virus has seasonal epidemics. [ 18 ] Clinically, we found that the number of pediatric with appendicitis was high in summer and autumn. This leads us to investigate whether appendicitis has a significant seasonality.…”

“…Therefore, active nursing intervention after caesarean section is of great significance. However, the traditional nursing model can no longer meet the actual needs of patients, evidence‐based nursing is a novel modern clinical nursing model, the core is ‘patient‐centred’, through the changes in the patient's condition, combined with the clinical practice experience and scientific and safety evidence‐based nursing practice basis, to meet the patient's needs for diversified nursing services, and thus achieve more satisfactory nursing results 42 …”

“…This increase in hospital visits may be caused by the delayed/deferred care in patients during the early months of pandemic and, therefore, increased the inpatient care visits with more complicated conditions [ 11 ]. This finding could also be associated with the cases of post-COVID-19 health complications and an increase of the adenovirus associated with acute appendicitis [ 35 , 36 ]. Several case reports have suggested a probable association between COVID-19 and subsequent acute appendicitis [ 36 ].…”
