Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor: biologic profile based on 499 cases

Abstract: Topographically, the AOT occurs in peripheral and central variants, the latter further in follicular (with embedded tooth) and extrafollicular (no embedded tooth) types. The AOT is slow growing with few or no symptoms. Tumor growth may cause displacement of teeth rather than root resorption. The follicular AOT mimics a follicular cyst, the extrafollicular a residual or "globulo-maxillary" cyst and the peripheral a gingival fibroma. All variants of AOT show identical histologic features. The central variants ac… Show more

“…It has been generally reported that AOT corresponds to 2.2-8.7 % of all odontogenic tumors [2,10,19]. However, in a worldwide collaborative retrospective study, the relative frequency of AOT ranged from 0.6 to 38.5 % [4].…”

“…Between the epithelial cells and in the center of the rosette-like structures, eosinophilic amorphous material (often described as 'tumor droplets') is present. Additionally, variably amounts of calcified material are present in most lesions [10].…”

“…4 Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor affects females more frequently than males in a ratio of 1.9:1. 2 This ratio may be even higher as reported in Asian populations, the highest incidence being observed in Sri Lanka, 3.2:1 5 and Japan, 3:1.…”
