Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast: Review of the literature and report of two cases

Abstract: Abstract. In this study, we report two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the breast. Two women presented to our hospital with a tender lump in the breast. Mammography and ultrasonography both revealed an ill-defined mass in the breast. We performed modified radical mastectomies on the patients, and pathological assessment following surgery showed ACC of the breast. Both patients received chemotherapy following surgery, have been followed up to date and remain in good health. In this study, we report t… Show more

“…On the other hand, simple lumpectomy is associated with unacceptably high rates of local recurrence. Wang S. et al (33) are suggesting a combination of lumpectomy with adjuvant systemic chemotherapy or local radiotherapy. They recommend simple lumpectomy for grade I tumors, simple mastectomy for grade II tumors and mastectomy with axillary clearance for grade III tumors.…”

“…[ 2 ] The mean age of diagnosis is 60 years, and AdCC may present with a palpable mass and/or breast tenderness. [ 3 4 ] In regards to imaging features, many are nonspecific, but there are common findings seen with AdCC. The typical mammographic appearance of AdCC is of an irregular or lobular mass with indistinct margins.…”

“…28 According to the pathological grading from I to III (defined by the proportion of solid growth elements), the proposed treatment is lumpectomy for grade I, simple mastectomy for grade II tumors and mastectomy with axillary clearance for grade III tumors. 29 Radical mastectomy is not advised due to the low incidence of nodal metastasis. Concerning adjuvant chemotherapy, endocrine or biological therapies for ACC, there are few studies, and their use is not recommended.…”
