“…Some adverse effects of oestrogen therapy may also be related to the total circulating oestrogen concentration. This may be the case for endometrial cancer (Lifshitz & Bernstein, 1983) and for breast cancer although the evidence that the latter is linked to oestrogen treatment is less certain (Edman, 1983). Since unconjugated oestrogen levels are substantially higher with oral treatment than equipotent transdermal treatment, we would suggest that the risk of cancer developing with the former is likely to be higher.…”
