In recent years, our knowledge of ovarian germ cell tumors has increased, and their classification has evolved. The introduction of cisplatin-based chemotherapy and the discovery of tumor markers, including alpha-fetoprotein and human chorionic gonadotropin, have dramatically changed the clinical outlook for most of these patients. In this review, recent advances in the classification and pathology of ovarian germ cell tumors are discussed. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with testicular germ cell tumors. The last section of the article discusses the pathogenesis of germ cell tumors. This review will emphasize the articles written in the last 10 years and those that have significantly advanced our knowledge of germ cell tumors in past decades.

ÖZETOverin matür kistik teratomunun malin transformasyonu oldukça nadir olup %1-2 sıklıkta görülmektedir. Yaklaşık 1 yıl önce meme kanseri nedeni ile tedavi gören 30 yaşındaki kadın hastanın sağ overinde skuamöz karsinom odağı içeren 9 cm lik bir matür kistik teratom saptadık.Anahtar Sözcükler: Malin transformasyon,Matür kistik teratom, Skuamöz hücreli karsinom. SUMMARYMalign transformation of mature cystic teratoma of ovary is extremely seldom(1-2%).A 9-cm mature cystic teratoma of ovary was diagnosed in a 30 years old woman who was treated for breast cancer about one year ago.Histopathologic examination revealed that teratoma has a small focus of squamous cell carcinoma .

Use of the Collagen Gel Droplet Embedded Drug Sensitivity Test to Determine Drug Sensitivity against Ovarian Mature Cystic Teratoma with Malignant Transformation to Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report

Background: The collagen gel droplet embedded drug sensitivity test (CD-DST) is a new anticancer drug sensitivity test that only requires a small number of cells. We report the use of this test in the choice of adjuvant chemotherapy for treatment of a rare case of ovarian cancer involving malignant transformation of ovarian mature cystic teratoma. Case Report: The patient was a 70-year-old female with an ovarian tumor, pleural effusion, carcinomatous ascites and a chest wall tumor. The histopathological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma, mature cystic teratoma with malignant transformation, stage IV. Paclitaxel/carboplatin therapy was selected as adjuvant chemotherapy based on CD-DST results. Upon completion of 6 courses, no increases in carcinomatous ascites or recurrent lesions were evident, and the chest wall tumor had disappeared completely. Conclusion: The CD-DST may be particularly useful for selecting preoperative chemotherapeutic drugs for patients with ovarian cancer in which the histological type of the primary tumor is unknown.
