Addressing the autism mental health crisis: the potential of phenomenology in neurodiversity-affirming clinical practices

Themistoklis Pantazakos,
Gert-Jan Vanaken

Abstract: The neurodiversity movement has introduced a new era for autism research. Yet, the neurodiversity paradigm and the autism clinic remain largely unconnected. With the present work, we aim to contribute to filling this lacuna by putting forward phenomenology as a foundation for developing neurodiversity-affirming clinical interventions for autism. In the first part of this paper, we highlight that autistic people face a severe mental health crisis. We argue that approaches focused on reducing autistic ‘symptoms’… Show more

“…Peer support is recognized as a genuine recovery-focused intervention for mental health issues (e.g., [77,78]) and is advocated in policy guidelines worldwide (e.g., [79][80][81][82]). Furthermore, studies indicate that participation in support groups can be beneficial for both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals [83,84]. Support can be unidirectional, provided by a paid peer support worker to a recipient, or it can be mutual, as seen in support groups [85].…”

“…Improvements to neurodivergent affirming mental health care are cited as one of the most pressing needs for the neurodivergent community at present ( Mason et al, 2023 ; Pantazakos and Vanaken, 2023 ). Importantly, neurodivergent affirming care is not based around the goal of “normalization” and does not require a medical diagnosis.…”

“…The mechanisms linking these background characteristics with youth adversity and mental health problems are likely to be multifaceted and complex. For instance, in individuals diagnosed with and or self‐identifying as neurodivergent, as well as those with heightened traits of neurodivergence – an individual's response to as well as from social/societal systems tailored to neurotypical functioning are likely to contribute to their experiences of adversity and mental ill health (Pantazakos & Vanaken, 2023). The specific mechanisms underlying these links are likely to differ to those underlying, for instance, ethnic marginalization and mental health problems (Williams et al, 2003), and observed gender differences in manifestations of mental health (Blakemore et al, 2010; Udry, 2000).…”
