A review of the literature on adaptation to bereavement during the COVID-19 pandemic was conducted to assess the current state of knowledge. Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases were searched for studies published during the first 6 months of the COVID-19 outbreak. 44 articles were included in the review. Narrative synthesis showed that knowledge was largely based on expert assessments of prior bereavement research and professional experience; there is so far absence of empirical evidence linking features of COVID-19 bereavement situations to health outcomes. Severe negative consequences have been consistently predicted by authors. There is still relatively little consideration of positive or compensatory processes or the possibility that these could alleviate the effect of the shocking, traumatic circumstances. With two notable exceptions, there has been lack of attention to the role of theoretical models for guiding research and practice. A theoretical perspective (the Dual Process Model, DPM) was applied to the information derived from the available articles. Two features of the DPM framework illustrated its relevance: 1. It enables systematic assessment of the range of loss- and restoration-related challenges for the bereaved; 2. It speaks for extension of psychotherapeutic intervention to manage secondary, restoration- as well as primary, loss-oriented stressors; studies have demonstrated that this may increase the effectiveness of intervention. Directions for future research and DPM application are suggested.

Objective: to carry out an analysis of the consequences for mental health arising from the period of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic and to foreshadow coping strategies to minimize them. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review, carried out based on the search for scientific publications indexed in the databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, Europe PMC, Lilacs and SciELO. The following descriptors were used: COVID-19, social isolation, pandemics and mental health. At the end of the searches, 49 publications met the eligibility criteria and were selected to compose the study. Results: in view of the findings extracted from the selected studies, it was noticed that individuals subjected to social isolation are more susceptible to presenting mental health disorders, due to deprivation and social restraint, with symptoms of psychological distress, especially related to stress, anxiety and depression. Conclusion: this study allowed us to reflect on the need to ensure clear and informative communication on strategies to reduce these symptoms of psychological distress, in addition to providing fundamental psychological and social support for these vulnerable individuals.

Suicide is one of the top 20 leading causes of death worldwide. With the rapid spreading of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) crisis around the world, suicide cases induced by the COVID‐19 pandemic have been reported in many countries. Individuals with suspected and confirmed COVID‐19 infection, frontline healthcare workers, bereaved families, elders, children, and adolescents are vulnerable populations who might be at elevated suicide risk. In this micro‐review, a systematic search through PubMed was performed for a comprehensive investigation of suicide risk factors during the pandemic. On this basis, we put forward considerations and advice for preventing pandemic related suicide, including staying socially connected through online platform or apps during period of quarantine, reducing unemployment, dispelling rumors and misinformation in time, and maintaining evidenced‐based management of psychiatric symptoms. More importantly, early detection and timely intervention of individuals with psychiatric disorders and suicide behaviors will be effective to reduce the number of suicides, with specific measurements of using validated scales to perform regular suicide risk screening, improving the availability of mental health services, and providing appropriate and evidence‐based interventions for individuals in demand. Policy makers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals need to collaborate to control the possible suicide events during the COVID‐19 pandemic and future possible crisis.
