Addressing medical absenteeism in pre-vocational secondary students: effectiveness of a public health intervention, using a quasi-experimental design

“…justify conclusions), the results will be interpreted alongside the literature. Our finding that a decrease in sickness absence was found in those in the intervention condition at six-month follow-up, compared with those in the control condition is in line with a previous study evaluating the MASS intervention at pre-vocational education [ 18 ]. A meta-analysis by Tanner-Smith et al also found that vocationally oriented programs showed promise in reducing school absenteeism [ 42 ].…”

“…This system offers nationwide preventive health care through anticipatory guidance for children and youth to promote growth, development, health, and well-being. The MASS intervention was initially implemented in pre-vocational education among students aged 12 to 16 years [ 18 ]. A significantly larger reduction in sickness absence was observed among students in the intervention condition receiving the MASS intervention than in the control condition.…”

“…Jongeren met ziekteverzuim worden vroegtijdig gesignaleerd en begeleid. M@ZL is effectief gebleken in het verminderen van ziekteverzuim en wil jongeren de regie laten nemen, maar biedt hiervoor in de praktijk nog onvoldoende houvast [ 2 , 4 ].…”

“…The MASS intervention has dual purposes: (1) stimulating collaboration between professionals involved in the care of a medically absent student, in particular schools, youth health care, and the school attendance service, and (2) optimizing students' health, maximizing students' participation in school activities, and limiting school absenteeism for medical reasons [17,18,24,25]. The MASS intervention shows promising effects regarding the reduction of absenteeism in secondary schools for medical reasons [25][26][27]. However, certain aspects of the intervention could still be further improved, for example, regarding the monitoring of students and stimulating students' autonomy regarding their situation, as well as regarding the collaboration between professionals [28].…”
