Addressing Climate Change in Responsible Research and Innovation: Recommendations for Its Operationalization

Abstract: Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) has only lately included environmental sustainability as a key area for the social desirability of research and innovation. That is one of the reasons why just a few RRI projects and proposals include environmental sustainability, and Climate Change (CC) in particular. CC is one of the grand challenges of our time and, thus, this paper contributes to the operationalization of CC prevention in RRI. To this end, the tools employed against CC were identified. Tools origin… Show more

“…On the contrary, empirical evidence is still scarce [18]. Following Owen et al [7] seminal article on RRI governance, several studies seek to understand the capacities for inclusion [36], the management practices [18], the stakeholders [13,16,37,38] and the difficulties and critical points in the inclusion process e.g., [18,20,38].…”

“…While innovation management literature emphasizes user and customer inclusion, RRI literature advocates for broader inclusion of both economic and non-economic stakeholders. One persistent debate concerns appropriate inclusion [20], difficulties concerning conflicts of interest [67], fear of loss of power over the process [14], and fear about the relationship between secrecy and transparency [68], as well as operational aspects such as the consumption of time and other resources [37]. Accordingly, we present the fourth and last question: who are the stakeholders who should participate in the RRI process?…”

“…The emphasis on innovation in research may be connected to the generally acknowledged commitment of managing technology, the need to demonstrate and communicate the impact of the research at social, environmental, and economic scales, and the need for a better integration between science and industry [34][35][36][37]. In this debate, the concept of RRI has emerged when discussing the impact of science on society and the co-production of solutions to deal with global sustainability goals and purposeful science [38,39], upstream engagement [40], and reflexive responsibility of innovation actors [34]. In research projects, the definition of an RRI strategy differs from the establishment of a research governance scheme by putting more emphasis on the open definition of purposes and motivations and not merely on the products of scientific evaluation [34].…”

“…However, in their current status, they are more recommendations than practical solutions, and they are more intended for public policies than for environmental assessment. Hence, they would hardly be useful for driving responsible research in practice [21].…”

“…The fields of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable innovation (SI) have devoted more attention to the development of tools covering the anticipation of environmental sustainability [21,24]. Unfortunately, SI is not yet applicable to R&I whose goal is not sustainability [25].…”
