Additives enhancing supported amines performance in CO2 capture from air

Abstract: The utilization of supported amines as adsorbents in direct air capture (DAC) has been demonstrated to be a promising strategy for the reduction of CO 2 emissions. To improve the performance of amine-based adsorbents, the incorporation of additives has been widely adopted. In the present study, we conduct a comprehensive comparison of seven additives on tetraethylenepentamine-impregnated mesoporous silica as a representative amine-based adsorbent. The results indicate that minor molecular weight additives wi… Show more

“…Commonly used silicon-based carriers include mesoporous silica (e.g., SBA-15, MCM-41), silica spheres, and fumed silica, among which silica spheres are superior carriers of different grafted amines due to their homogeneous particle size and unique properties. 115 Commonly used amine groups are tri (2aminoethyl) amine (TREN), tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), 116 and polyethylenimine (PEI). 117 The silol (Si− OH) group on the surface of porous silica acts as a bridge between the amino or mercaptan groups, and the amine graft adsorbent has a strong reaction between the hydroxyl group and the alkoxy group on the surface of the amino silane.…”

“…As a result, four categories of efficient solutions-carbon reduction, carbon capture, carbon utilization, and carbon sequestration-are essential [4][5][6][7] . Taking into account the accumulated CO 2 and urgent demand of renewable energy, the conversion of CO 2 into valuable resources, which enables it to re-enter the social carbon cycle system, is a crucial step in achieving carbon neutrality [8][9][10] . CO 2 conversion technologies, such as biochemical conversion, thermochemical conversion, photochemical reduction and electrochemical reduction, have emerged as promising responses to the aforementioned issues in recent years [11,12] .…”
