Additive Wax-Up and Diagnostic Mockup As Driving Tools for Minimally Invasive Veneer Preparations

Abstract: This report describes the importance of and outlines steps for additive wax-up and diagnostic mockup for anterior teeth as diagnostic and driving tools for non-prep and minimally invasive veneer preparations. A 35-year-old male presented to the clinic with the chief complaint of spaces between his front teeth. Diagnostic additive wax-up provided the possibility of offering minimally invasive preparations, and the use of a diagnostic intraoral mockup fulfilled the patient's esthetic demands for treatment approv… Show more

“…40 However, anterior teeth are commonly treated with ceramic LV. 41,42 The restoration preparations followed the guidelines provided by Celtra Duo (Dentsply Sirona) for veneers: 1.5 mm incisal reduction, 0.4 mm incisal, and 0.6 middle third reduction, whereas for full-coverage crowns: 1.5 mm incisal reduction, 1.0 mm chamfer margin, and 1.5 mm middle third reduction. 43 According to the manufacturer, LV with ZLS can be fabricated with thicknesses from 1.0 to 1.5 mm.…”

“…The maxillary right central incisor was selected in this study because central incisors are the most noticeable teeth in the mouth and, therefore, can cause the most esthetic concerns addressed by clinicians 40 . However, anterior teeth are commonly treated with ceramic LV 41,42 . The restoration preparations followed the guidelines provided by Celtra Duo (Dentsply Sirona) for veneers: 1.5 mm incisal reduction, 0.4 mm incisal, and 0.6 middle third reduction, whereas for full‐coverage crowns: 1.5 mm incisal reduction, 1.0 mm chamfer margin, and 1.5 mm middle third reduction 43 .…”

“…The diagnostic wax-up is the first step, which can be performed using the additive technique, creating the possibility of a diagnostic mock-up. However, this may not be possible in situations where the tooth is rotated or tilted or there are interproximal gaps between the teeth [ 17 ].…”

“…Ceramic LVs are often used to address issues, such as incisal wear, facial defects, fractures, tooth discoloration, and interdental spaces in a conservative manner, since they only require the reduction of 25–50 % of tooth structure compared to traditional full coverage restorations ( Edelhoff and Sorensen, 2002 , Villalobos-Tinoco et al, 2020 ). Conservative preparations for LV restorations have been well documented in the literature and enable the fabrication of thin, bondable restorations on enamel tooth structure ( Afrashtehfar, 2021 , Villalobos-Tinoco et al, 2022 ).…”
