Additions to the Indonesian fauna of the hermit crab genus Pseudopaguristes McLaughlin and a further division of the genus Paguristes Dana (Crustacea: Decapoda: Paguroidea: Diogenidae)

Abstract: An in-depth study of the genera Paguristes Dana, 1851 and Pseudopaguristes McLaughlin, 2002 in Indonesian waters has resulted in refined hypotheses of some of the evolutionary trajectories within the Paguroidea. Not only has the observed reduction in pleurobranch and arthrobranch number in three species, Paguristes hians Henderson, 1888, P. kuekenthali De Man, 1902 and P. monoporus Morgan, 1987 required the transfer of these taxa to Pseudopaguristes, they, and two new species, have required an emendation of th… Show more

“…exhibit several significant characters (e.g., absence of epipod on first maxilliped, and lack of spines on ventral margins of dactyls of second and third pereopods) that were not considered in the original diagnosis of the genus Areopaguristes or mentioned in descriptions of these two species. Furthermore, Ayón-Parente & Hendrickx (2006Hendrickx ( , 2012 previously found that three eastern Pacific species (A. mclaughlinae, A. lemaitrei, and A. waldoschmitti) differ in important characters such as lack of first pleopods in females, from other congeners known from the Indo-West Pacific and western Atlantic (Rahayu 2005, McLaughlin 2008, Komai 2009, 2010, Lemaitre & Felder 2012. Thus, the need fulfilled in this study to emend the diagnosis of Areopaguristes.…”

“…rIlL' hierarchical classification used follows that of Martin and Davis (2001); the division of the genus Paguristes Dana, 1851 is that of Rahayu (2005). The shield length (sI), as measured from the tip of the rostrum or midpoint of the rostra I lobe (exclusive of the intercalary rostra I process of [)iogenes species) to the midpoint of the posterior margin of the shield provides an indication of animal size.…”
