Additional diagnostic value of MRI in patients with suspicious breast lesions based on ultrasound

Abstract: Objective: Biopsy has long been the standard approach in Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System® (BI-RADS) 4 or BI-RADS 5 (American College of Radiology, Reston, VA) lesions despite a wide variation in reported incidence of malignancy in BI-RADS 4 lesions. This study examined the diagnostic value of breast MRI as well as its ability to decrease unnecessary biopsies in patients with solid breast lesions who had an indication for biopsy. Methods: In this retrospective study, 277 breast lesions with a documente… Show more

“…According to Sarica & Uluc the sensitivity, specificity, NPV and PPV of MRI in BI-RADS III lesions were 94.2, 56.1, 90.7 and 68.1%, respectively When only sonomammograghy is used, the corresponding figures were as follows: 90.9, 56.7, 93.8 and 46.4% (24) .…”

“…MRI does not currently seem to be effective in ruling out the need for biopsy in the assessment of sonographic BI-RADS 4 lesions (Sarica and Uluc 2014). When only ultrasonographic BI-RADS 4 lesions are considered, the SP of MRI was 56.7% (Sarica and Uluc 2014).…”

When only ultrasonographic BI-RADS 4 lesions are considered, the SP of MRI was 56.7% (Sarica and Uluc 2014). In meta-analysis, the SP of contrast-enhanced MRI in patients with breast lesions is 0.72 (Peters, et al 2008), and the pooled weighted SP of quantitative, diffusion- weighted (DW) MR imaging in patients with breast lesions was 0.84 (Chen, et al 2010).…”

“…Worldwide, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the breast is regarded as the most sensitive imaging technique for detecting breast cancer (1,2) . Although MRI has a very high sensitivity for detecting breast lesions, characterizing those lesions requires the interpretation of multiple images with a variety of contrasts (3) .…”
