Addition of dairy lipids and probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum in infant formula programs gut microbiota and entero-insular axis in adult minipigs

Abstract: Clinical and animal studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of early consumption of dairy lipids and a probiotic, Lactobacillus fermentum (Lf), on infant gut physiology. The objective of this study was to investigate their long-term effects on gut microbiota and host entero-insular axis and metabolism. Piglets were suckled with a milk formula containing only plant lipids (PL), a half-half mixture of plant lipids and dairy lipids (DL), or this mixture supplemented with Lf (DL + Lf). They were weaned on a s… Show more

“…IF supplemented with dairy lipids had a beneficial impact on intestinal immune function. Indeed in adult pigs fed a dairy lipid-supplemented IF in infancy, pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNFa and IL-8) secretions of ileal explants in response to a LPS challenge was decreased compared to adult pigs early fed IF containing vegetable lipids (Lemaire et al, 2017). Therefore, the introduction of bovine fat in IFs may reduce the gap between breast-fed and IF-fed infant physiology and health, with a higher efficacy than the introduction of solely MFGM, as demonstrated in animal studies.…”

“…Extraction of total bacterial DNA from fecal pellets was performed using guanidium thiocyanate and the mechanical bead-beating disruption method as previously described [23]. The V3-4 region of the 16S rRNA genes was amplified using MolTaq (Molzym, Plaisir, France) and primers V3F: TACGGRAGGCAGCAG and V4R: ATCTTACCAGGGTATCTAATCCT.…”
