“…For years following Castle's work, the cause of pernicious anaemia had been thought to be impaired secretion of intrinsic factor due to gastric atrophy, although this view had been questioned by some authorities (Askey, 1944 ;Murphy, 1948). Several cases have now been reported of proved pernicious anaemia in children and young adults where gastric biopsy revealed normal gastric mucosa (Mollin et al, 1955Leikin, 1960Lambert et al, 1961). It becomes apparent either that gastric atrophy is not essential to the development of pernicious anaemia or that pernicious anaemia in children and that in adults are different diseases.…”
