Adding a Question About Method Switching to the Method Information Index Is a Better Predictor of Contraceptive Continuation

Abstract: Adding the question “Were you told about the possibility of switching to another method if the method you selected was not suitable?” to the Method Information Index (MII) was associated with better contraceptive continuation. This MIIplus variable includes another domain of quality of care, and thus better reflects voluntary contraceptive use and continuation.

“…As shown elsewhere using data from this study (Jain et al 2019b), adding a fourth question to the MII about the possibility of switching methods if the method selected was no longer suitable better predicts contraceptive continuation three months later. This new measure, the MIIplus, is calculated as the percentage of women who answer "yes" to all four questions.…”

“…Lastly, method-specific contraceptive continuation was used as the outcome in this study, excluding women who switched to other modern methods or traditional methods of contraception from the numerator. While switching methods should be considered a positive outcome for women who want to continue preventing pregnancy but find their current method unsuitable [36], in this study there was not enough variation in the outcome variable of modern contraceptive continuation, so method-specific continuation was used instead.…”

“… 5 Recent publications, including one by several authors of this paper, have documented a strong association between counseling quality, measured by either the Method Information Index (MII) or a variant and contraceptive continuation. 7 9 Consensus on how best to define and measure facility-level quality of care in family planning has not yet been reached, however, and consensus is also lacking on the aspects of quality that may be important for reducing the risk of discontinuation while in need.…”
