Disruption prediction using a long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm has been developed on EAST, due to its inherent advantages in time series data processing. In the present work, LSTM is used as the model and the AUC (area under receiver operation characteristic curve) is used as the evaluation index. When the model is trained on data from the plasma current flattop phase and tested on data from the same period multiple times, the highest AUC is 0.8646 and the training time is about 6900 s per epoch. For comparison, the last 1000 ms of the flattop phases are intercepted as short time sequences. When the model is trained on data from short time sequences and tested on data from the same period, the highest AUC is increased to 0.9379 and the training time is restricted to 36 s per epoch. When the best model trained on the short time sequences is applied to the flattop phase for testing, the AUC is up to 0.9189. The experiment results show that it is possible for LSTM to train the model on data from short time sequences and migrate the model to the entire flattop phase, with a shorter training time and higher AUC value.

Measurement of plasma electron density by far-infrared laser polarimetry has become a routineand indispensable tool in magnetic confinement fusion research. This article presents the designof a Cotton-Mouton polarimetric interferometer, which provides a reliable density measurementwithout fringe jumps. Cotton-Mouton effect on EAST is studied by Stokes equation with threeparameters (s1, s2, s3). It demonstrates that under the condition of a small Cotton-Moutoneffect, parameter s2 contains information about Cotton-Mouton effect which is proportionalto the line-integrated density. For a typical EAST plasma, the magnitude of Cotton-Moutoneffects is less than 2π for laser wavelength 432µm. Refractive effect due to density gradient iscalculated to be negligible. Time modulation of Stokes parameters (s2, s3) provides heterodynemeasurement. Due to the instabilities arising from laser oscillation and beam refraction inplasmas, it is necessary for the system to be insensitive to variations in the amplitude of thedetection signal. Furthermore, it is shown that non-equal amplitude of X-mode and O-modewithin a certain range only affects the DC offset of Stokes parameters (s2,s3) but does notgreatly influence the phase measurements of Cotton-Mouton effects.

Open source, open content and open access are set to fundamentally alter the conditions of knowledge production and distribution. Open source, open content and open access are also the most tangible result of the shift towards e-Science and digital networking. Yet, widespread misperceptions exist about the impact of this shift on knowledge distribution and scientific publishing. It is argued, on the one hand, that for the academy there principally is no digital dilemma surrounding copyright and there is no contradiction between open science and the knowledge-based economy if profits are made from nonexclusive rights. On the other hand, pressure for the 'digital doubling' of research articles in Open Access repositories (the 'green road') is misguided and the current model of Open Access publishing (the 'gold road') has not much future outside biomedicine. Commercial publishers must understand that business models based on the transfer of copyright have not much future either. Digital technology and its economics favour the severance of distribution from certification. What is required of universities and governments, scholars and publishers, is to clear the way for digital innovations in knowledge distribution and scholarly publishing by enabling the emergence of a competitive market that is based on nonexclusive rights. This requires no change in the law but merely an end to the praxis of copyright transfer and exclusive licensing. The best way forward for research organisations, universities and scientists is the adoption of standard copyright licenses that reserve some rights, namely Attribution and No Derivative Works, but otherwise will allow for the unlimited reproduction, dissemination and re-use of the research article, commercial uses included.
