Added Sugars and Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners in a Representative Sample of Food Products Consumed by the Spanish ANIBES Study Population

Abstract: Low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS), intensely sweet compounds that virtually contain no calories, are used to replace added sugars in food and drinks. Knowledge about different LNCS data in Spanish foods and added sugar sources in Spain is limited, therefore our aim was to identify and compare their presence across main food groups consumed. Food and beverage products (n = 434) were obtained from the ANIBES Study (anthropometric data, macronutrients and micronutrients intake, practice of physical activity, … Show more

“…Our study showed that the most used LNCS in 2019 were acesulfame K and sucralose, similar to studies from Ireland [34] and Italy [35]. In Spain [10] and the USA [36], the major LNCS were acesulfame K and aspartame, similar to findings in Norway where they pointed out that in beverages, these LNCS are used mostly in combination [37]. A typical combination of acesulfame K and aspartame was also observed in our study.…”

“…This indicates a slight, but non-significant ( p = 0.12) increase in the use of LNCS, over the course of two years. Comparison of our results with similar studies showed that the use of LNCS in non-alcoholic beverages in Slovenia was relatively low when compared to Latin America (>40%) [ 15 ], USA (23.9%) [ 26 ], or Spain (39.2%) [ 10 ]. A lower prevalence of LNCS use in non-alcoholic beverages has been reported only for New Zealand (8.7%) and Australia (2.3%) [ 26 ].…”

“…However, they may also contain added sugar, salt or fats. Sport drinks are increasingly consumed to replace conventional soft drinks for the lower sugar content, particularly among adolescents and young people in Spain [96,97]. This group of beverages is located in the third level of the pyramid.…”

“…This diet is characterized by the consumption of high quantities of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and nuts, unrefined cereals, fish, and olive oil, a low to moderate intake of dairy products, and consumption of low amounts of red meat, poultry, and saturated fats [ 11 ]. However, the consumption of inadequate diets with excessive amounts of foods with added sugar and/or a deficit of certain macronutrients and vitamins have also been described in developed countries, such as Spain and Italy [ 12 ].…”
