This article proposes guidance on how academic researchers can publish maintaining research quality, research excellence, impact and ethics principles. The three features of artificial intelligence (AI) (intentionality, intelligence, and adaptability) have been applied towards developing the foundation of publishing like "thinking machine". By revisiting the notions of "publish or perish", Research Excellence Framework (REF), academic pathways of teaching and research (T&R) or Teaching, Scholarship and Professional Practice (TSPP), this article develop propositions on achieving high-quality, impactful and compliant research. Also, the article reveals ethical dilemmas such as abuse of data, unconsented acknowledgements, the oligopoly of major publishers, "all authors have contributed equally", a decline in the quality of publications, "add my name", "ghost authorship" and gifted authorship. Finally, the article develops ethics rules and 12 simple guidelines on how to publish like AI but obey the rules of the game.

Purpose This study aims to reflect on the extent to which research approaches need to be deconstructed and re-imagined towards developing inclusive knowledge and non-extractive research approaches from a Global South perspective. Design/methodology/approach Conceptually, integrating the methodological logic and strategy of community-based participatory research (CBPR) and a postcolonial paradigm of decolonising research, this study proposes a research process that engages cultural diversity and an inclusive environment. CBPR approach enables involving, informing and consulting Indigenous communities in espousing theoretical approaches and giving voice to marginalised groups. Findings This study answers pertinent questions on what “decolonising” means and how to decolonise research by developing a model of culturally inclusive research approaches. This study ultimately posits that colonialism dominates research and limits knowledge transmission among Indigenous research ideologies. Research limitations/implications In recent years, the world has witnessed major socio-political protests that challenges systemic racism and the role of education and institutions in perpetuating racial inequality. This study advocates that researchers consider integrating communities in the designing, conducting, gathering of data, analysing, interpreting and reporting research. Practical implications This study advocates knowledge creation through research that considers integrating the voices of Indigenous communities in the design, analysis, interpretation and reporting of research protocols. Originality/value In the light of anticolonial thought, decolonising research approaches provides a means for a radical change in research ethics protocol. A model of culturally inclusive research approach was developed, using the framework of CBPR, decolonising the research approaches comprising 6 Rs (respect, relevance, reciprocity, responsibility, relationships and relationality).

Research Performance and Hierarchical Staff-Mix by Rank in a Research-Oriented System: A Case Study

This study examines the relationship between the research performance and the hierarchical staff-mix by rank (or staff-mix categories) for academics in a research-oriented system. A supervised learning approach is employed to classify academics on the basis of their research performance and the association between this classification and the staff-mix categories is measured using the Somer’s [Formula: see text] coefficient. Although there have been other studies on research performance for such a system based on the volume-based indicators of research performance, this is the first study that assesses the researchers’ position in the academic reward structure on the basis of research performance. The Scopus database is used as a collection of individual productivity in research. A case-study is presented on a cross-section of academics in the mathematics discipline from different federal universities in Nigeria. The results show that there is a dearth of outstanding scientists in the system and that there is a weak association between research performance and the staff-mix categories. The need for scientific collaboration by way of a continuous collegial interaction between the outstanding scientists and the emerging scholars in the system is suggested.
