Adaptive Transitions: The Long‐Term Perspective on Humans in Changing Coastal Settings

Abstract: Adaptation is a key concept in long‐term human adjustments to climate change. Despite the centrality of human decisions and actions in adaptation, much of the climate change literature is thin on humanities and social science which are the primary approaches for understanding human activity. This situation is particularly pronounced in Louisiana's discussions about its disappearing coast line where research has concentrated in understanding biophysical processes and solutions prioritize short‐term adaptations.… Show more

“…Still, there may be observations and theoretical reflections that also have explanatory value in other contexts. In recent academic thinking, there is also discussion about nature conservation versus understanding ecosystems as co-evolving and dynamic systems [17,103,104].…”

“…1 See: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/infographics/JTF/index.html for community resilience, however, two immaterial triggers contribute decisively to the mobilisation of the agency: a) sense of place, which begins with awareness, continues with attachment to place, and then with a use of this attachment (Schmitz, 2012); and b) social memory, serving as a reservoir of practices, knowledge, values and worldviews, which will ultimately strengthen the vital role of human agency in adaptation (Colten, 2019). Although it has been assigned a key role in the success of the just transition, resilience has rarely been predicted before a shock, stress, or disaster has occurred (Weichselgartner and Kelman, 2015).…”

“…The estuarine wetlands in eastern Chongming Island (Figure 1) have witnessed historical changes in land-use patterns. A long-term perspective is of great importance in providing guidelines for adaptation activities in coastal areas (Colten, 2019), therefore, we should learn lessons from past wetland utilization to identify improvements in future adaptations. Local history and geography influenced past adaptations and will continue to influence the future.…”
