Adaptive Thermochromic Windows from Active Plasmonic Elastomers

Abstract: Thermochromic windows can smartly modulate the indoor solar irradiation, leading to energy saving for architectural heating and cooling systems. Herein, we integrate the active plasmonic VO 2 nanoparticles in kirigami-inspired reconfigurable elastomers to achieve adaptive, broadband, and highly efficient solar modulation. The smart window promises a UV-visible-NIR traverse state in cold days and a UV-visible-NIR blocked state in hot days to reduce the architectural heating and cooling energy consumption.

“…This is because the better dispersion of the core−shell crystals than the bare Mg‐doped crystals in the matrix, and the aggregation of VO 2 crystals may lower the thermochromic performance by reducing the transmittance contrast at dense solar energy region of ≈1000 to 1500 nm. [ 47 ]…”

“…The 50 mg of as-prepared VO2 NPs were evenly dispersed into 5 mL ethanol and 5 mL concentrated Si-Al solution by one-hour ultrasonication bath. The synthesis of the Si-Al solution has been reported in our previous work [8]. The VO2 films were further prepared by spin coating on the soda-lime glass substrate with the same speed and coating times.…”

“…The MIT happens within 1 ps [3], accompanied by an abrupt electrical resistance change of approximately five orders of magnitude [4]. As well as changes of structure and electrical properties, the abrupt optical modulation in the wavelength of infrared [5], terahertz [6], and microwave [7] during MIT gives VO2 great potential for applications such as thermochromic smart windows [8], 3D-printed smart window [9], optical switching devices [10], light modulator [11], and infrared stealth [12].…”

“…Thermochromic materials are compounds or mixtures that change their visible absorption spectra when heated or cooled. In particular, reversible thermochromic materials have the function of color memory [118]. It has the characteristics of discoloration at a specific temperature, showing a new color, and restoring to the original color when the temperature is restored to the initial temperature [119,120].…”
