Adaptive personal agents

Abstract: Personal agents are an important advance in the management of electronic information. Accurate user profiling is critical to the personalisation of agent-based services. In this paper we describe a framework for personal agents, which provides a range of services using a common user profile. The user profile is automatically learned from observation of the electronic documents a user reads, and tracks user interests over time. We report on a large trial of this framework, which has given us important insights … Show more

“…For example, a collaborator at British Telecom has developed a version of the RA that can find documents that are related to a current location based on GPS coordinates. 11 If a document is similar to a person's current context based on more than one field (e.g., if both the "from" field and body of a message partially match), a linear combination of the similarities are used based on weights defined in the templates. The template system is also used for queries, so fields can be parsed out of e-mail being written or Web pages being read.…”

“…Crabtree et al [41] present the results of a userprofiling trial within a system which presents personalised information to users based on their interests. The paper shows how using a common profile and sharing it between multiple personal applications can track user interests more accurately and apply personalisation more effectively.…”

“…The two broad categories illustrated by the papers in this Special Issue highlight how this might be achieved. The first three papers [41][42][43] show techniques for presenting information to individuals. They report on various developments such as improved techniques for user modelling and profile acquistion, and information filtering and presentation; these could be characterised as the "visible" elements of agent technology.…”

“…In handling all the service options, there will be a role for intelligent personal agents and profiles to manage the mushrooming complexity. Personal Agents [14] adapt and learn users interests and needs to be able to perform specific tasks on the users behalf. A good example is a personal agent that learns how to manage a users incoming e-mail, and automate the filing or deleting of irrelevant messages.…”
