In this paper, a new amplification scheme for adaptive MIMO systems is proposed and tested. In this ‘hybrid amplification’ configuration, different amplifiers with different peak powers are used. In this way, each transmitter RF chain has a different DC-power consumption behavior. The adaptation algorithm, which chooses power and rate for each transmitter, uses these different amplifier behaviors to minimize the overall consumed energy. Several MIMO configurations designed for constant capacity applications have been simulated with different amplification schemes. Realistic amplifier models based on measured data are used. The difference between the amplifiers’ RF powers is set in order to keep optimal system performances. Then, it is shown that energy savings higher than 10% can be obtained with the hybrid amplification. The different tests are done for MQAM constellations in uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels detected with a VBLAST ZF-SIC algorithm but can easily be extended to other correlated channels, detection algorithms or constellations

In this paper we propose joint antenna selection MIMO and adaptive modulation scheme for high spectral efficiency and power efficiency wireless transceiver design. In our proposed scheme the number of active receive antennas for spatial multiplexing MIMO detection is determined at the rate of the large scale channel variation which is a function of the path loss and shadowing parameters, while the link adaptation is updated as fast as the coherence time. Hence, in our proposed scheme, the rate of antenna selection is slower than the link adaptation, which is motivated by the fact that the portion of the power consumption is dominated by RF chains during the initial period of the switched-on terminal and some wireless service does not require the large scale mobility. From our analysis we determine the number of the active receive antennas to achieve a certain target ergodic capacity as well as a target link performance and evaluate bit error rate, average spectral efficiency and the outage probability for two MIMO detection schemes such as maximum likelihood and zero-forcing. Some selected numerical examples are finally presented and discussed to illustrate the tradeoff offered by this scheme.

In this paper, a simplified adaptive modulation (AM) scheme is presented for MIMO spatial multiplexing systems to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance. Constrained to total data rate and equal power allocated to each transmit antenna, an efficient AM algorithm is described to minimize the average BER of the system. The performances of vertical Bell labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) structure combined with the presented AM scheme are investigated. Simulation results have shown that the presented scheme can provide superior performances over the original V-BLAST system under perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI).
