Adaptive gamification in E‐learning: A literature review and future challenges

Abstract: The trend of gamification in online education has grown as technological advancements allow for more digitized learning environments to create interactive and engaging learning experiences. Learners are motivated in various ways, which necessitates an understanding of gamification mechanics and dynamics that produce enjoyment to adapt them to a variety of factors such as personality, needs, values, and motivations of each learner. Furthermore, exploration and advancement in the field of artificial intelligence… Show more

“…With the proliferation of social media and other related technical devices, humans have become the main sensor of the environment [76,77] Earlier people sensed the environment, but they did not have enough modes and media to express and share the environmental changes and the local knowledge attached to it [78,79]. In contrast, now people are equipped with different devices such as mobile phones, mobile applications, and media such as different social media platforms to express their feelings and observations [80][81][82].…”

“…Educational games and simulations are another area where AI can play a valuable role in e-learning. AIsupported games and simulations can provide engaging and interactive learning experiences that can help students develop critical skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity (Bennani, Maalel, and Ben Ghezala, 2022). For example, AI-supported virtual simulations can allow students to experiment with complex scenarios and test their knowledge and skills in a safe and controlled environment.…”

“…It became one of the most widely used mechanisms in e-learning platforms, but it follows a static mapping approach that could be insufficient for all learners. Due to the inability of this static gamification approach to anticipate an individual's state, interest in and engagement with the perceived challenges gradually wane over time because successful performance associated with cognitive and behavioral conditions may be affected by individual and task characteristics [9,34,48].…”

“…Though gamification brings a significant change in student engagement, it is inadequate for all learners as it supports the "one size fits all" approach. This leads to a loss of interest and engagement decline over time in the perceived challenges because the cognitive ability and behavioral condition that correlate to good performance may vary based on individuals and task characteristics [9,34,48].…”
