Adaptive Expanding Ring Search Based Per Hop Behavior Rendition of Routing in MANETs

Routing protocols in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) play a pivotal role in ensuring quality of service (QoS) and improving network performance. Selection of optimal routing protocol and suitable parameters for a given network scenario is a major task that ultimately affects the behavior of network. This work exploits machine learning (ML) techniques for the selection of adequate routing parameters and protocol by regression of parameters in given network scenario to ensure optimal performance. The network is trained based on parametric setup of expanding ring search mechanism (ERS) and random early detection (RED) technique to estimate network throughput, end to end (E2E) delay and packets delivery ratio (PDR) and is tested via wide-ranging simulations in varying network topologies. Both RED and ERS mechanisms are aimed to control link and node level congestion in the reactive routing protocols and our aim is to select the best suited parameters for given network topologies based on ERS and RED parametric setups and improve performance for ensuring QoS. ML algorithms are trained and tested for their performance in varying network topologies. We have exploited these models with best performance for ERS and RED based routing in given topological arrangements. The performance of the ML algorithms is evaluated on the basis of root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) for regression settings. Prediction models with up to par RMSE and MAE out-turns are attained and exploited for selection of suitable ERS and RED parameters and routing protocols in order to ensure the QoS for given network scenario. Variants of standard routing protocols are devised based on their performance and the ML techniques are exploited for prediction of QoS parameters to decide on the optimal variant that attains significant improvement in performance. Results are shown to confirm that considerable improvement in QoS is attained. The unmanned aerial vehicle communication networks (UAVCNs) are composed of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) connected in ad hoc mode to facilitate vertical communication in 5G and beyond networks. UAVs operating in an ad hoc mode of operation mostly use reactive routing protocols to establish routes in the network to reduce the energy consumption of the nodes. In this article, a route discovery method is presented to reduce the overhead faced by reactive routing protocols during the route discovery phase. The expanding ring search (ERS) method is mostly used by reactive routing protocols in the destination discovery phase of the routing algorithm. Although the performance of the ERS method is better than simple flooding, the presented method further reduces energy consumption and routing overhead as compared to the conventional ERS method. To achieve the task, the time to live (TTL) is modified to accommodate a large number of nodes in a search attempt. We proposed variants of the proposed techniques for diverse application requirements and compared the performance with the state-of-the-art ERS technique. It has been demonstrated with the help of simulations that the presented algorithm outperforms the ERS method in terms of reduced routing overhead and reduced energy consumption.

Current efforts for providing an efficient dynamic source routing protocol (DSR) for use in multi-hop ad-hoc wireless are promising. This is since DSR has a unique characteristic in that it uses source routing, instead of relying on the routing table at each intermediate device. This study addresses the current challenges facing DSR protocol in terms of the dynamic changes of the route and how to update such changes into the route cache of the DSR. The challenges typically persist when a sudden route break occurs resulting in a delay in updating the new node location into the cache of the DSR protocol. For that, this study proposes a novel algorithm to improve the cache updating of DSR protocol in the ad-hoc network using dominating set-based routing (DBR). In DBR, the dominating nodes establish node update cache in accordance with the characteristics of the new route. Network Simulator version 2 (NS2) was used to implement and evaluate the proposed algorithm. A comparison of certain performance metrics was carried among the proposed DSR-DBR, DSR-route-cache, and DSR-original in the transmission control protocol and user datagram protocol. The DSR-DBR performance result showed a significant improvement in the average throughput, average end-to-end delay, average discovery time and routing overhead.
